Junius Irving Scales (1832-1888) of Rockingham county, NC, entered the University in 1850 and graduated with third honors in 1853. He became a lawyer and married Effie H. Anderson. In 1858 was elected to the NC House of Commons. After serving in the Civil War he became a member of the NC Senate (1876-79).
